Initialising the trailer
Before the trailer assist can be used, the trailer characteristics have to be determined automatically while the vehicle is being driven. To initialise the trailer, drive forwards for a short distance, both straight on and around corners. If the trailer assist is switched on but the initialisation procedure has not yet been completed, the following message will appear on the infotainment display: Trailer assist: drive carefully and operate brakes yourself to initialise trailer. During the initialisation procedure, the system is available with limited functionality. Different zones depict the current and desired trailer orientation Fig. 168►. When the initialisation procedure is finished, these zones become narrower like needle pointers Fig. 169►.
The blue pointer -A- represents the current orientation and the orange pointer -C- represents the desired orientation of the trailer.
Using the trailer assist
It is only possible to switch the trailer assist on/off when the vehicle is stationary or driving forwards at not more than 10 km/h.
Press the button Fig. ►. The LED in the button will light up.
Take your hands off the steering wheel.
Turn the rotary pushbutton to select the desired orientation of the trailer within the possible adjustment range -D-. Or:
Press the rotary pushbutton to align the trailer straight behind the vehicle. If the blue pointer -A- is inside the markings -B- when you press the rotary pushbutton, the trailer will retain its direction of travel and the vehicle will be positioned straight in front of the trailer.
You can change the desired trailer orientation -C- at any time while the vehicle is moving by turning the rotary pushbutton.
To switch off the trailer assist, press the button. The LED in the button will go out.
Switching between the reversing camera* and graphic display
Select the following on the infotainment system when the trailer assist is activated: right control button > View.
Automatic safety brake
The trailer assist can initiate an automatic safety brake application in certain situations. In this case, the parking brake will be applied. The parking brake will be released automatically when you drive forwards. To drive in reverse, you must first release the parking brake manually and deactivate the system using the button. The trailer assist can initiate a safety brake application in the following situations:
- If the driver intervenes in the steering.
- If the steering angle is too large.
- If a malfunction is detected.
Note
- The driver cannot override the safety brake application.
- If you try to continue reversing by releasing the parking brake manually after the first safety brake application, the brakes will be applied again.
- The trailer assist will be deactivated if you drive forwards faster than 10 km/h. If you do not exceed 20 km/h, the system will be activated again automatically when you engage reverse gear.
