- Fig. 1 Ignition key positions
The ignition key is used to start and switch off the engine.
Position -0-
The ignition key is inserted in this position. This will automatically release the steering lock. The steering lock will engage again automatically when you take out the ignition key WARNING!.
Switching on the ignition/preheating glow plugs -1-
Turn the ignition key to this position and let go of the key. In the case of vehicles with a diesel engine the key is turned to this position to preheat the glow plugs.
Starting the engine -2-
Turn the key to this position to start the engine. Electrical components with a high power consumption are switched off temporarily.
Switching off the ignition -0-
Turn the ignition key to this position.
- Wait for the vehicle to come to a standstill before removing the ignition key from the lock. The steering lock engages immediately (accident risk).
- Always take the key with you when leaving the vehicle - even if you only intend to be gone for a short time. This is especially important if children are left in the car. They might otherwise be able to start the engine or use power-operated equipment such as the electric windows - this could lead to injuries.
Note
- When you let go of the ignition key in position -2-, it automatically returns to position -1-.
- If you open the driver's door while the ignition is switched on, a warning buzzer will sound, and the message Ignition is on will appear in the display. In this case, please switch off the ignition.
- After switching off the ignition, you can only withdraw the ignition key if the selector lever is in position "P" (parking lock). The selector lever cannot be moved after the ignition key has been taken out.
- To prevent ignition lock malfunctions, you should remove any dirt on the key so that the dirt does not get into the lock.
