- Fig. 1 Deluxe automatic air conditioner: Controls on dashboard
- Fig. 2 Deluxe automatic air conditioner (4-zone*): Controls in rear cabin
We recommend pressing the AUTO button and setting the temperature to 22 °C (72 °F).
The functions can be switched on and off by pressing the buttons. The rotary control is used to adjust the temperature, blower speed, air distribution and seat heating/ventilation*. The diode in the corresponding button lights up when the function is switched on. The settings will appear on the display of the MMI for several seconds. Separate settings can be selected for the driver's and front passenger's sides.
On the 4-zone deluxe automatic air conditioner*, you can also select separate settings for both sides of the rear cabin.
ON/OFF Switching the air conditioner on/off
The ON/OFF button is used to switch the air conditioner on and off. The air conditioner will also switch on if you operate the rotary control or press one of the buttons. The ON/OFF button in the rear cabin just switches the rear air conditioning on/off. When the air conditioner is switched off, the supply of air from outside the car is cut off.
AC Switching air cooling on/off
When the air cooling is switched off, the air is neither cooled nor dehumidified. The windows may mist up as a result. The air cooling is switched off automatically at low outside temperatures (below zero).
Switching air recirculation on/off
In air recirculation mode, the air from the interior of the vehicle is filtered and recirculated. This setting prevents fumes etc. from entering the interior. We recommend switching on the air recirculation mode when driving through a tunnel or in traffic queues WARNING!.
The air recirculation mode is switched off when the AUTO or button is pressed.
AUTO Switching automatic mode on
The automatic mode maintains a constant temperature inside the vehicle. Air temperature, output and distribution are regulated automatically.
– + Selecting the temperature
The temperature can be adjusted between +16 °C (+60 °F) and +28 °C (+84 °F). Outside this range, LO or HI will appear on the air conditioner display. In the two extreme settings the air conditioner operates continuously with maximum cooling or heating output, and the temperature is not regulated automatically.
Adjusting the blower speed
You can adjust the blower speed manually. Press the AUTO button for automatic control of the blower speed.
Adjusting the air distribution
You can direct the flow of air manually to selected outlets. Press the AUTO button for automatic air distribution.
/ * Adjusting the seat heating /ventilation*
In setting 0 the seat heating/ventilation is switched off. On vehicles without a 4-zone deluxe automatic air conditioner*, the seat heating for the two outer rear seats* is adjusted via thumbwheels in the rear centre console.
Switching the defroster on/off
The windscreen and side windows are defrosted or demisted as quickly as possible. The air output is increased to maximum and most of the air comes out of the outlets below the windscreen. The air recirculation mode is deactivated.
The defroster is switched off when the AUTO button is pressed.
Switching the rear window heating on/off
The rear window heating operates only when the engine is running and switches off automatically after a few minutes, depending on the outside temperature.
To switch on the rear window heating permanently, press and hold the button for at least 2 seconds. It will then remain on until the ignition is switched off.
Residual heat
You can press and hold the ON/OFF button when the ignition is switched off to activate the "residual heat" function Fig. 1. The system will then heat the interior using the remaining heat in the engine coolant.
Air outlets
The thumbwheels can be used to open and close the air outlets in the centre and on either side of the dashboard and rear centre console and the outlets in the door pillars. The lever in the centre of the outlets can be used to adjust the direction of air flow.
For reasons of safety you should not leave the air recirculation switched on for too long. This mode prevents fresh air from entering the vehicle, so the windows can mist over if the air cooling is switched off. Bad visibility can cause an accident.
Caution!
To avoid damaging the heating elements of the seat heating, please do not kneel on the seat or apply sharp pressure at a single point.
Note
- The heating only operates when a sensor registers the weight of the occupant in the seat. Any heavy items you place on the seats could also cause the seat heating to come on. The seats can also be pre-heated for about 10 minutes. After this time the seat heating will automatically switch off if the seat is not occupied.
- The rear A/C control console* cannot be operated if the electric child protection* is switched on or the safety switch is pressed in. In this case the display of the air conditioner for the rear cabin will show lines like this "---".
