The task manager shows you all the apps currently active. You can close the apps or switch to one of the active apps.
Calling up the task manager
Tap on the 
button.

Swipe your finger upwards/downwards in the task manager until the desired app is shown in the miniature view.
Tap on the miniature view of the app.
Closing an app
Tap the x symbol in the miniature view of the app. Or: Drag the miniature view of the app to the left/right edge of the screen until the app is closed. Or: tap the symbol to close all the apps at once.
