- Fig. 1 Instrument cluster: Collision warning
Applies to vehicles: with adaptive cruise control
The Audi braking guard uses radar sensors and a video camera. It
is active at speeds above approximately 10 km/h and, subject to
certain limitations inherent in the system, operates even when the
adaptive cruise control is switched off.
What can the Audi braking guard do?
Given sufficient time to react, it can assess a dangerous situation
where a vehicle in front brakes suddenly or where you are driving
fast and approach a much slower vehicle. The Audi braking guard
will not react if it is not in a position to detect the danger.
The system draws the driver's attention to various types of
hazard:
- A distance warning is given if you are too close to the vehicle in front for more than just a moment. If the vehicle in front were to brake hard, a collision would no longer be avoidable. This is indicated by a warning lamp on the display.
- A collision warning is given if the vehicle in front is much slower than you or if it brakes hard. If this warning is given, you may need to take evasive action or brake hard to avoid a collision. The warning lamp and display draw your attention to the danger Fig. 1. In addition, a tone will sound.
If you do not take appropriate action in time, the Audi braking
guard will assist by applying the brakes and displaying the
message braking guard activated.
- In the event of an impending collision, an acute warning will be given initially in the form of a brake jolt.
- On vehicles for some markets only: If you do not respond to the acute warning, the Audi braking guard will apply the brakes in several stages with increasing brake force, in order to slow the vehicle down and take the impact out of a potential collision. Just before a collision, it can initiate a full brake application. The final stages, including full brake application, are initiated only on vehicles with adaptive cruise control and Audi side assist (Audi pre sense plus).
- If the Audi braking guard detects that you are not braking hard enough in the event of an impending collision, it will increase the brake pressure.
- In the event of an impending collision, the Audi pre sense functions are activated in addition Link.
The Audi braking guard factors in a reaction time for the driver,
so that it can warn you in time. This system response time is
automatically reduced if accelerator pedal or steering activity
is detected, for instance. The Audi braking guard input is cancelled,
for instance if you floor the accelerator in order to overtake.
Which functions can the driver control?
You can switch the Audi braking guard and distance/collision
warning on and off via the MMI
Link.
WARNING!
Audi braking guard is a driver assist function and cannot prevent
a collision on its own. The driver must always intervene personally.
As the driver you are always responsible for braking in good time.
Note
- The Audi braking guard input with increasing brake force can be cancelled by applying the brakes yourself or by pressing the accelerator firmly.
