Audi A6, A6 hybrid, S6   Controls   Driving  Starting and stopping the engine
You can use the START ENGINE STOP button to switch on the ignition and start the engine.
Starting the engine
Hybrid vehicles: Please note the information on starting the vehicle Link.
Manual gearbox: Press the clutch pedal all the way down and move the gear lever into neutral.
Vehicles with automatic gearbox: Press the brake pedal and move the selector lever to position P or N WARNING!.
Press the START ENGINE STOP button. The engine should start.
Diesel engines can take a few seconds longer than usual to start on cold days. Please keep your foot on the clutch pedal (manual gearbox) or brake pedal (automatic gearbox) until the engine starts. The indicator lamp lights up while the glow plugs are preheating.
Switching the ignition on/off
If you only wish to switch on the ignition and do not want to start the engine as well, proceed as follows:
Press the START ENGINE STOP button without pressing the clutch (manual gearbox) or brake pedal (automatic gearbox).
To switch off the ignition, press the button again.
Diesel engines are automatically preheated when you switch on the ignition.
Electrical components with a high power consumption are switched off temporarily while you start the engine.
If the engine fails to start immediately, the starter will be switched off automatically after a few seconds. Try to start the engine again.
Start/stop system
When you stop and the start/stop system turns off the engine, the ignition remains on.
  • If you press the START ENGINE STOP button at this stage, the ignition will be switched off. The engine will not be started Link.
  • Before leaving the vehicle, ensure that the ignition is switched off.
Automatic gearbox*
To prevent the battery from being discharged, the ignition and the engine will automatically be switched off if certain conditions are met. For instance:
  • The vehicle has already been driven.
  • The driver's door is opened.
  • The driver's seat belt is unbuckled.
  • The brake pedal is pressed.
  • The vehicle is stationary.
If the dipped beam headlights are switched on in this case, the side lights will be turned on instead. After a certain period of time or when you lock the vehicle, the side lights will be switched off.
WARNING!
  • Never run the engine in confined spaces. The exhaust gases are toxic.
  • The brake servo and the power steering system work only when the engine is running. You need more strength to steer and brake the vehicle when the engine is switched off. This would mean a greater risk of accidents and serious injury, because you cannot steer and brake in the normal manner.
Caution!
Avoid high engine speeds, full throttle and extreme load conditions until the engine has reached its normal operating temperature, otherwise this can damage the engine.
For the sake of the environment
Do not warm up the engine by running it with the car stationary. You should drive off immediately whenever possible. This will help avoid unnecessary exhaust emissions.
Note
  • When starting from cold the engine may be a little noisy for the first few seconds until oil pressure has built up in the hydraulic tappets. This is quite normal and no cause for concern.
  • If you leave the vehicle with the ignition switched on, it will be switched off automatically after a while. Please note that electrical equipment such as the exterior lighting will also be switched off.
