Applies to: vehicles with coasting mode
In certain situations when the vehicle is coasting, a special coasting mode is activated in order to save fuel. In this mode, the engine is disengaged from the gearbox and the vehicle coasts in neutral without the engine braking effect.
In coasting mode, the engine is switched off and on again automatically as required.
Basic conditions for coasting mode
- (Applies to vehicles with efficiency assist: ) Coasting mode must be activated on the MMI link►.
- The selector lever must be in position D.
- The driver’s foot must be off the accelerator.
- The brakes must not be applied.
- The vehicle must not be on a steep gradient.
Coasting mode can be activated automatically at speeds above approx. 30 km/h. It can remain active at speeds of up to 160 km/h or until the vehicle has come to a standstill.
The efficiency assist* has a large influence on the automatic activation of coasting mode link►.
WARNING
When coasting mode is activated, there is no longer an engine braking effect and the vehicle does not slow down as quickly as usual or may even pick up speed if you are driving down a slope - risk of accident!
Note
- You can cancel coasting mode by applying the accelerator or brakes. Slight corrective brake applications are also possible without cancelling coasting mode.
- On some engine versions, coasting mode may not be activated until above approx. 55 km/h and the engine may not be switched off while the vehicle is moving.
