- Fig. 1 Audi A4 as seen from the rear right: Unscrewing the AdBlue cap
- Fig. 2 AdBlue filler neck: Inserting the refill bottle
Applies to Audi A4s: with selective catalytic reduction
A special refill bottle is needed in order to fill the tank with AdBlue.
The flap that covers the tank cap is unlocked and locked automatically by the central locking. The AdBlue filler neck is located immediately beside the diesel filler neck. Refill with at least 7.6 litres of AdBlue (four bottles). If you do not refill this amount of fluid, the system may not detect that the tank has been refilled and it may not be possible to restart the engine. The AdBlue tank holds about 20 litres.
Opening the filler neck and refilling AdBlue
Important: A message in the instrument cluster display informs you if you need to refill AdBlue.
Switch off the ignition.
Open the tank flap Link.
Unscrew the cap on the filler neck anti-clockwise using the box spanner from the Audi A4's tool kit Fig. 1.
Take the cap off the refill bottle.
Screw the refill bottle onto the filler neck clockwise as far as it will go -1- Fig. 2.
To empty the refill bottle, lightly press the bottom of the bottle -2-. Keep pressing the bottom of the bottle until the bottle is empty, or until no more fluid runs into the tank.
Unscrew the bottle anti-clockwise without applying pressure.
Closing the filler neck
Screw the cap onto the filler neck by turning the box spanner clockwise until you hear the cap click tight.
Close the tank flap.
After refilling
The Audi A4 must be driven. It can take up to two minutes for the system to detect that the AdBlue has been refilled.
If the AdBlue tank had run dry and a range of 0 km was shown on the display, switch on the ignition for approx. 15 seconds before starting the engine.
WARNING!
AdBlue can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory organs. Wash thoroughly with clean water should you come into contact with this fluid. Seek medical assistance if needed.
Caution!
- Use only AdBlue that complies with the ISO 22241-1 standard. Do not mix AdBlue with additives and do not dilute it with water.
- AdBlue must not be added to the diesel tank, and diesel must not be added to the AdBlue tank. Mixing the two can result in damage to the engine and to the AdBlue tank system. Such damage is not covered by the warranty.
- AdBlue attacks surfaces such as paintwork, plastic veneer and carpets. Remove spilt fluid as soon as possible with a damp cloth and plenty of water. If the AdBlue has already solidified, use warm water and a sponge. Unremoved residues of AdBlue solidify after a while and can damage the affected surface.
- Do not carry refill bottles in the Audi A4 all the time, as leaking AdBlue can damage the Audi A4 interior.
- Keep AdBlue away from clothing. Wash thoroughly with clean water should you come into contact with this fluid.
Note
- Refill bottles are available from qualified workshops.
- Please follow the AdBlue manufacturer's instructions for storage and use.
