In coasting mode, you can use the vehicle's kinetic energy to drive without using the accelerator on certain stretches of road. This saves fuel by allowing you to take your foot off the accelerator earlier and let the vehicle coast (for instance when approaching a speed restriction in a built-up area).
Switching on coasting mode
Important: The vehicle speed must be above 20 km/h and the selector lever must be in position D.
Select efficiency mode in drive select*
Link.
Take your foot off the accelerator.
The gearbox automatically disengages the clutch and lets the vehicle coast without the engine braking effect. The gear will no longer be displayed in the instrument cluster (e.g. E instead of E7). The message Coasting appears when the current fuel consumption display is selected in the on-board computer.
Stopping coasting mode
If you would like to use the engine braking effect and overrun fuel cut-off, tap the brake pedal briefly.
Then press the brake pedal or accelerator; the S tronic gearbox will automatically engage a gear.
You can improve your fuel economy and help to reduce emissions by using a combination of the coasting mode (i.e. coasting with low fuel consumption on a longer stretch of road) and the overrun fuel cut-off (i.e. using the engine braking effect with no fuel consumption on a shorter stretch of road).
WARNING!
- Please remember that the vehicle will not slow down as quickly as usual when you take your foot off the accelerator when coasting mode is active - risk of accident!
- The vehicle can pick up speed if you are driving down a slope in coasting mode - risk of accident!
- If other people are using your car, you should draw their attention to the coasting mode.
Note
- The coasting mode can only be activated on gradients below 12 %; it is deactivated temporarily on gradients of 15 % or greater.
