- Fig. 1 Instrument cluster: Gear-change indicator on vehicles without driver information system
- Fig. 2 Instrument cluster: Gear-change indicator recommending neutral on vehicles with driver information system
Applies to vehicles: with gear-change indicator
This additional indicator function can help to save fuel.
To familiarise yourself with the gear-change indicator, drive in the normal way to start with. A gear change will be recommended if the gear you are in is not the most economical choice. If no gear change is recommended, you are already in the most economical gear.
Vehicles with manual gearbox
The display will tell you which gear you are in and whether to change up or down.
- Shift up a gear: The arrow to the right of the current gear points upwards.
- Shift down a gear: The arrow to the right of the current gear points downwards.
Applies to vehicles with a start/stop system: If all the conditions for a stop phase Link have been met, but the gear lever is in gear with the clutch depressed, the gear change indicator will recommend changing to N Fig. 2.
- N: Put the gear lever in neutral and take your foot off the clutch pedal. The start/stop system will automatically switch off the engine.
Vehicles with automatic gearbox
The display is only visible in tiptronic mode Link. Only recommendations to shift up a gear will be displayed. If the arrow to the right of the current gear points upwards, shift up a gear.
Caution!
The gear-change indicator is intended to help save fuel. It is not intended to recommend the right gear for all driving situations. In certain situations, only the driver can choose the correct gear (for instance when overtaking, driving up a steep gradient or towing a trailer).
